American Consumers Will Bear Cost of Tariffs

Mar 22, 2018 by AFP

Arlington, VA – Following President Trump’s announcement today regarding tariffs on foreign exports – an action that would raise prices on low- and middle-income American families, increase costs for business, and undermine the benefits of tax reform – Americans for Prosperity President Tim Phillips issued the following statement:

“No matter their intention, tariffs are regressive policies that leave American consumers, workers and businesses bearing the costs of higher prices. What’s more, tariffs lead to fewer jobs and a weaker economy. These tariffs will soon undermine the bold tax reform agenda advanced by this administration. Leaders in Washington should be focused on policies that remove barriers to opportunity, not create them.”

BACKGROUND:

AFP has expressed consistent opposition to tariffs in all forms, issuing statements in recent weeks denouncing the Trump administration’s steel and aluminum tariffs.
